Day 1-3: Through the Heart of Europe

The first three days took me through northern France and into Belgium. The transition from the busy suburbs of Paris to the peaceful countryside was immediate and refreshing. Rolling through the Champagne region, I couldn't resist stopping at a few vineyards to sample the local produce.

Belgium surprised me with its cycling infrastructure and the warmth of its people. The cobblestone streets of Bruges felt like cycling through a medieval fairytale, while Brussels offered the perfect opportunity to fuel up on authentic Belgian waffles and chocolate.

"There's something magical about cycling through Europe's countryside. Every village tells a story, every hill offers a new perspective, and every border crossing feels like opening a new chapter."

Personal reflection during the journey

The Netherlands: Cycling Paradise

Entering the Netherlands was like stepping into a cyclist's dream. The extensive network of dedicated bike paths, the respectful drivers, and the flat terrain made for some of the most enjoyable cycling of the entire trip.

Amsterdam provided a rest day that I desperately needed. The city's bike culture is infectious - seeing families, business people, and tourists all navigating the city by bicycle reinforced why I chose this mode of transport for my adventure.

Germany and Denmark: The Northern Approach

Germany's varied landscape provided some of the most challenging and rewarding cycling. From the industrial areas near the Dutch border to the beautiful countryside of Schleswig-Holstein, every kilometer offered something new.

The ferry crossing from Denmark to Norway marked a significant milestone. Standing on the deck, watching the Danish coast disappear and the Norwegian fjords appear on the horizon, I felt a surge of excitement for what lay ahead.

Norway: A Different World

Entering Norway by bicycle gives you a perspective that no other form of transport can match. The gradual transition from Danish countryside to Norwegian wilderness is breathtaking. The air becomes cleaner, the landscape more dramatic, and the sense of adventure more intense.

The final push to Oslo was both exhausting and exhilarating. After over 1,300 kilometers and eight days on the road, seeing the Norwegian capital emerge from the surrounding hills felt like a massive achievement.

"Oslo welcomed me with open arms and sore legs. Standing in the city center, looking back at the route I'd just completed, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment and excitement for the Norwegian adventures that lay ahead."

Arrival in Oslo

Lessons Learned and Practical Tips

This journey taught me valuable lessons about long-distance bikepacking across multiple countries:

  • Research border requirements - some countries have specific regulations for cyclists
  • Carry local currency for each country - not all places accept cards
  • Learn basic phrases in each language - locals appreciate the effort
  • Plan for varying weather conditions - Northern Europe can be unpredictable
  • Book accommodations in advance, especially in smaller towns
  • Carry a good map and GPS backup - don't rely solely on phone navigation

The Perfect Introduction to Norway

This Paris to Oslo journey serves as the perfect introduction to Norwegian adventures. By the time you reach Oslo, you're physically prepared for the challenges that Norwegian terrain will throw at you, and mentally attuned to the sense of adventure that defines Scandinavian exploration.
